The 1001 MeowMeow Project
The 1001 MeowMeows project is a collaboration between the Taiwan-Reyhanli Centre and five local not-for-profit organizations. The collaboration provides guidance and encouragements to Syrian and Turkish women for initiating a joint venture that combines traditional knitting, lively modern design and local produce to create heartfelt handmade gifts.
The 1001 MeowMeows product series comprise the Classic Aleppo combo of MeowMeow pouch and soap. Cho says that every MeowMeow is unique and special; every special MeowMeow has a name; every named MeowMeow has its stories; every Meowy story is captivating and worth our attention.
Under the guidance of the Taiwan–Reyhanli Centre, the 1001 MeowMeows project encourages each and every woman to customize their unique design for the MeowMeow soap pouch, with each handmade pouch becoming the story and expression of their own experiences. These soap pouches give voices to these women so that their softly whispered stories could be heard when expressed together. The world will come to the realization that the wars have not ended and masses of people are still in struggles to survive. Cho believes that only stories coming from the hearts could touch a heart, and only an empathetic heart could mend the wrongs of our world.
The MeowMeow soap pouch only requires care and patience, threads of yarn and knitting needles to free a woman from the confinement of home to start participate in welfare-enhancing activities. Cho believes that work and production are the best therapies for those people injured by wars and conflicts. They are also the best ways to re-establish their dignity and socioeconomic status. Every MeowMeow could bring happiness for these women today, while building hopes for the future.
The classic Aleppo combo of 1001 MeowMeows pouch and soap is another feature of the project. Aleppo – the second largest city in today’s Syria - is renowned for its soaps since the times of ancient Rome, with historical references about 2000 years ago documenting its famous production of soaps. This soap is made from premium organic cinnamon and olive oils according to a carefully balanced four-to-one-part ratio. Its superior quality has contributed towards its popularity among the gentry.
Today, substandard ‘Aleppo’ soaps have infiltrated the market. For this reason, Taiwan–Reyhanli Centre specifically sought out a collaboration with the most reputable national food corporation in Turkey – Torku. The quality assurance process combines traditional sensibility with modern food processing methods to meticulously safeguard every single step from growing olive and cinnamon trees, extracting oils, to producing soaps. These steps are strictly followed to ensure that the final products contain no pesticides, preservatives, chemicals or artificial fragrance; to assure the customers that the soaps are neutral and gentle to the skin. Because of the care afforded, the soaps are suitable for dry and sensitive skins.
Cho urges all adults and children to scrub from head to toes with MeowMeow. MeowMeow will live happily ever after in your company, especially in warm winter bath.
The Taiwan-Reyhanli Centre will not only dedicate all its efforts towards improving the living conditions of refugees, but will also promote social cohesion and harmony among Turkish and Syrian people living in Reyhanli. The Centre will continue to share stories of the hearts, and combine them with the shared commitments between Turkey and Syria, so as to present the world with a simple gift of kindness.
